Meet Our Summer Associates: Malaka Al Hayawa

Malaka Al Hayawa poses for a head shot in Richmond's City Center PlazaMalaka Al Hayawa is an incoming student at the University of California, Davis who recently concluded her studies at Contra Costa College. She is a graduate of De Anza High School, and she joined the Richmond Promise Summer Associate program in the summer of 2025.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Is there anything in particular that motivates you as you go through college and prepare yourself for a career?

A: I’m a college student studying business administration. What keeps me going is my family and my desire to create a better future for myself and the people I care about.

Q: How has Richmond Promise played a role in your education?

A: Richmond Promise has supported me with both financial help and encouragement. It made college feel more possible and less stressful.

Q: Why did you choose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate, and what are you hoping to take from the experience?

A: I wanted to give back to the program that helped me. I plan to develop my skills, connect with other students, and contribute to my community.

Q: What do you want to contribute to Richmond and/or the world?

A: I want to help young people reach their goals and feel supported, just like I’ve felt with Richmond Promise.

Q: How has your current college experience gone, and what has been the best part?

A: It has been a combination of hard work and great memories. The highlight has been meeting new people and discovering more about myself.

Q: What advice would you give to a first-year Richmond Promise Scholar who is just heading off to a new college or CTE program?

A: Take your time, ask for help when you need it, and don’t stress about having everything figured out right away. You’re not alone. I live by the saying, “Live, laugh, and love.”

Q: What are you looking forward to doing after finishing school?

A: I’m excited to embark on a career where I can help others and make a positive impact in my community.
