Meet Our Summer Associates: Isaac Jones III
Isaac Jones III currently attends Sacramento City College and is a 2019 graduate of El Cerrito High School. He plans to eventually transfer to Sacramento State and pursue a degree in Political Science with a minor in History.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Is there anything in particular that motivates you as you go through college and prepare yourself for a career?
A: I am a product of Richmond. I have lived here for 17 years and plan to come back and live here or near here to be able to give back to my community. My community is what motivates me. Knowing that a degree can help me to help others is one of the biggest motivators in my life. Getting my degree will allow me to enrich and teach others.
Q: How has Richmond Promise played a role in your education?
A: Richmond Promise has helped lessen my financial load and has allowed me to focus more on education rather than funds. RP has also given me a lot of support through peer coaches who have checked on me and offered support.
Q: Why did you choose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate and what are you hoping to take from the experience?
A: I chose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate because I wanted to give back and I saw what it did for me last year. I wanted to be a part of something meaningful and it is in the field of what I want to do in the future.
Q: What do you want to contribute to Richmond and/or the world?
A: I want to be a leader in Richmond. Whether silently or vocally, I want to lead and give opportunities and a safe place for my city and others like it. I really just want to give back to the city that raised me up. I want to be a teacher, counselor and advocate to the people in Richmond and the world.
Q: Can you tell us about your current college experience?
A: My current college experience has been up and down but has been on the upswing as of recently. I struggled in the beginning. Being away from home and trying to balance work and school was tough. But, over time and using my resources, I was able to push through and have been doing well and enjoyed my first-year experience.
Q: What are you looking forward to after receiving your bachelor’s/transferring?
A: After transferring from Sacramento City College with my Associate’s Degree in Political Science and History, I plan to transfer to Sacramento State and pursue my degree in Political Science with a minor in History. When I obtain that, I want to get into community building or teaching but I have not decided yet.
