Meet Our RP Leads Scholars: Suha Malik
Suha Malik is a graduate of De Anza High School who currently attends UC Berkeley. Suha is majoring in Political Economy and Public Health.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Is there anything in particular that motivates you as you go through college and prepare yourself for a career?
A: I am a first-generation college student driven towards the legal field (something I was introduced to in high school). As a Pakistani-American, I come from a community where education has just been popularized. Therefore, I aim to serve as a mentor for other young girls in my community, uplifting voices that have been previously silenced by authority figures. I want to turn my hardships into something motivating for other people, and my time at Cal will only ensure I become a safe place for those around me, especially as a Pakistani girl in Law.
Q: When did you first realize that you were college-bound?
A: I first realized I was college-bound when I knew I wanted something different than what I had been exposed to before. My passion for wanting to be involved in different communities at Cal, or my hometown, carried into college, making me realize that it is something I love!
Q: How has Richmond Promise played a role in your education?
A: Richmond Promise has granted me a community of like-minded individuals. It’s definitely not something to take for granted. The opportunities I receive will definitely help me in the long run. The connections I have with my cohorts will definitely last well into our careers.
Q: Why did you choose to apply for RP Leads, and what are you hoping to take from the experience?
A: I chose to apply for RP Leads as I want to be more open to more experiences, hopeful in what I want to do, and make connections that will last a lifetime. The skills I learn from this experience will hopefully be used to teach others in my community. In an academic environment as rigorous as Berkeley, I want to be able to have a support system to work with.
Q: What do you want to contribute to Richmond and/or the world?
A: I want to ultimately give back to my community to uplift others.
Q: How has your current college experience gone, and what has been the best part?
A: My current college experience has really been amazing, definitely grateful for all the opportunities at Berkeley. The best part has been meeting my lifelong friends and community.
Q: What challenges have you overcome to get to where you are today?
A: As a first-generation student, I have overcome a lot of struggles while basically navigating everything on my own. But it gives you great strength in order to adapt easily to others and new environments. Definitely, every day is a learning experience. However, I wish to really find joy in it.
Q: What advice would you give to a first-year Richmond Promise Scholar who is just heading off to a new college or CTE program?
A: Don’t be nervous, and don’t compare yourself to others because everyone is on their own path!
Q: What are you looking forward to doing after finishing school?
A: I am looking forward to the new experiences I will face and the time I will have to dedicate to them. I can’t wait to try new things!
