Meet Our Near-Peer Ambassadors: Luis Orellana

 In Scholar Profiles

During the 2023-24 school year, the Richmond Promise College Access Team will be joined in its work by Near-Peer Ambassadors. These members of our team are current RP Scholars who assist in the execution of in-classroom programming in local high schools. We are pleased to introduce you to one of our 2023-24 Ambassadors, Luis.

Luis Orellana head shotQ: First, some basic info. Tell us your name, current school, the high school you graduated from and your major (or intended field of study):

A: My name is Luis Orellana. I grew up in San Francisco but moved to Richmond five years ago for my freshman year at Richmond High School. I attend San Francisco State University as a second-year student majoring in computer engineering.

Q: What are you most looking forward to about being an RP Near-Peer Ambassador and what are you hoping to get from the experience?

A: Being a Near-Peer Ambassador for Richmond Promise is something I value as I get to spread awareness of scholarship opportunities to my community in need. I hear from local families that tuition costs are very stressful to deal with, therefore I am looking forward to helping students with applying for the Scholarship. I hope to build the reputation of the Richmond Promise Scholarship and contribute to its expansion.

Q: If you were going to give advice to a high school senior about going through the college application process, what would it be?

A: If you have the funds at your disposal, travel somewhere to attend college. The college experience can be lived anywhere, but studying and living in a new environment can provide opportunities that you cannot get elsewhere. Also, apply to as many scholarships as you can because programs are created to help students with finances in college. The more money, the better.

Q: What’s the best part about being in college/what should a high school senior look forward to?

A: Getting out of the comfort zone is something that is fun for someone who hasn’t experienced much in high school. It may be tough at first, but new experiences may lead to your new hobby or meeting lifelong friends.

Q: What are you most looking forward to after college?

A: I am looking forward to traveling as adventuring in new places is one of my favorite hobbies. I am also excited to apply my engineering skills at a reputable tech company, preferably in Southern California.
