Telma Pedro poses for a head shot in Richmond's City Center PlazaTelma Pedro currently attends the University of California, Merced and is a graduate of Kennedy High School. She will begin her third year at UC Merced in the fall of 2025, and she joined the Richmond Promise Summer Associate program in the summer of 2025.

Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Is there anything in particular that motivates you as you go through college and prepare yourself for a career?

A: My name is Telma Pedro, and I’m originally from Guatemala. I’m currently pursuing a degree in Psychology with a minor in Public Health at UC Merced. After immigrating to the United States with my father in 2016, I’ve worked hard to excel academically and personally. As a first-generation college student, I’m motivated to create a better future for my family and community.

Q: How has Richmond Promise played a role in your education?

A: Richmond Promise has been supportive in my education by providing opportunities that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. I’m deeply grateful for the support, and it’s helped me build a brighter future for myself and my family.

Q: Why did you choose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate, and what are you hoping to take from the experience?

A: I chose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate because I relate to the challenges recent graduates face when deciding about college. I want to be a support system and inspiration for them. Through this experience, I hope to develop my public speaking skills, contribute to community building, and empower the next generation of students to pursue their dreams.

Q: What do you want to contribute to Richmond and/or the world?

A: I aim to use my skills and knowledge to make a positive impact in my community. Whether through volunteering, internships, or future career opportunities, I aim to drive meaningful change and improve the lives of those around me.

Q: How has your current college experience gone, and what has been the best part?

A: My first semester had its challenges, as I was still adjusting to college life. But so far it’s been an amazing
journey. I’ve learned so much, both in and out of the classroom. The best part is the friendships I’ve made and
the opportunities I’ve had which made me grow both professionally and personally.

Q: What advice would you give to a first-year Richmond Promise Scholar who is just heading off to a new college or CTE program?

A: Don’t hesitate to ask for help when you need it, and don’t be too hard on yourself when you make mistakes.
Remember, one class or grade doesn’t define your entire journey. Take your time, prioritize your mental health, and trust that you’re capable of achieving great things.

Q: What are you looking forward to doing after finishing school?

A: I’m looking forward to gaining more professional experience and applying my skills in real world environments.
