Meet Our Summer Associates: Dina Masoud
Dina Masoud attends Berkeley City College and is currently an upcoming second year. She graduated from Summit Tamalpais in 2025. She is currently studying Sociology & Psychology, and she joined the Richmond Promise Summer Associate program in the summer of 2026.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Is there anything in particular that motivates you as you go through college and prepare yourself for a career?
A: My name is Dina and I am currently studying sociology & Psychology at Berkeley City College. I am passionate about education and creating opportunities for underrepresented communities. My experiences growing up and navigating college have shaped who I am and motivated me to keep pushing forward. As I go through college and prepare for my future career, I am especially motivated by the idea of breaking barriers for students who come from similar backgrounds as me and may not always have clear access to guidance or resources.
Working in a Career and Transfer Center at my community college has shown me how powerful support and
mentorship can be for students of all ages who are trying to reach higher education goals. Seeing students gain
confidence when they understand their options and pathways motivates me to continue helping others in any
way I can. I am also driven by my own growth in college, learning how to stay disciplined, confident, and
focused even when things are challenging.
Q: How has Richmond Promise played a role in your education?
A: Richmond Promise played a big role in my education by lifting a weight off my shoulders and reducing that burden, allowing me to focus more on my education and future goals. As a first generation immigrant student, navigating American education is very challenging. Knowing that Richmond Promise is there for me makes me feel reassured, encouraged, and less alone throughout the process. It gives me confidence knowing that someone believes in my future and wants to see me succeed.
Q: Why did you choose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate and what are you hoping to take from the experience?
A: I chose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate because I want to support students who once were like me. Nervous, excited, and unsure of what to expect. When I was an incoming college freshman, I remember being supported by the summer associates, and I want to give back that same support to new college students from my hometown.
Q: What do you want to contribute to Richmond and/or the world?
A: I want to contribute to Richmond and the world by breaking barriers that limit underrepresented students from accessing and succeeding in higher education, while also building stronger, more supportive communities around them. Working in a Career and Transfer Center at a community college has shown me how students of all ages, especially first-generation, low-income, and immigrant students often need consistent guidance, encouragement, and access to clear pathways in order to reach higher education goals. At the same time, my experiences supporting and mentoring students through different programs have strengthened my commitment to helping people feel seen, capable, and prepared for their futures. I want to expand educational access by helping students navigate college systems, understand their options, and feel confident pursuing four-year universities and beyond. Overall, I hope to contribute to a future where education is not limited
Q: How has your current college experience gone, and what has been the best part?
A: At first, it was rocky, but as time goes by, you have nothing but to believe in yourself! I have grown and learned so many things, not only academically but also personally. I’ve become more confident, driven, and self-aware throughout my college experience. Along the way, I’ve also built a strong support system with great mentors and friends who have encouraged me, guided me, and helped me stay focused on my goals. The challenges I faced in the beginning pushed me to develop better study habits, manage my time more effectively, and trust my ability to overcome obstacles. Overall, the best part has been realizing my own growth and understanding that even difficult starts can lead to strong progress and meaningful success.
Q: What advice would you give to a first-year Richmond Promise Scholar who is just heading off to a new college or CTE program?
A: BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
Q: What are you looking forward to doing after finishing school?
A: I am looking forward to continuing my education and earning my PhD degree!
