Meet Our Summer Associates: Suri Esquivel Rodriguez
Suri Esquivel Rodriguez is a third-year student at Dominican University where she is majoring in Nursing. She is a graduate of Leadership Public Schools Richmond and entered the Richmond Promise Summer Associate program in the summer of 2026.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Is there anything in particular that motivates you as you go through college and prepare yourself for a career?
A: Navigating the healthcare system can be especially challenging for those who face language barriers or have limited access to healthcare. Many people in underserved communities are uninsured or overlooked, making it difficult to receive the care they need. I want to become part of the small percentage of Latino nurses so that I can advocate for those who go unheard. Witnessing these disparities in my own community is what further motivates me to bridge these gaps in healthcare. I have a commitment to push back against systems that often fail to treat every person with the compassion and dignity they deserve.
Q: How has Richmond Promise played a role in your education?
A: Richmond Promise has enabled me as a first-generation student to have a better shot at a leveled playing field as I navigate higher institutions. Richmond Promise offered me support from 1:1 coaching to financial support. My first year was a struggle. But without Richmond Promise I would have not been able to afford my books and supplies that I needed nor would I have had the resources to make sure I was on the right track.
Q: Why did you choose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate and what are you hoping to take from the experience?
A: I chose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate because navigating higher education is intimidating, especially as a first-gen student. I had to learn everything first hand. from applying for financial aid, interpreting financial aid packages, and learning how to feel confident enough to know I do belong in these spaces. I hope to be a representation of my community. To showcase that BIPOC peoples deserve to take up space in education. I hope to take with me a sense of tranquility knowing that I did what I could to help someone who was once in my shoes. I want to take with me the meaningful conversations and interactions held with our youth.
Q: What do you want to contribute to Richmond and/or the world?
A: I want to contribute to Richmond and the world by supporting underserved communities and working to push back against unjust systems. My goal is to create more inclusive and equitable spaces in education and in healthcare. I am committed to advocating for those whose voices often go silenced or overlooked while continuing to find and strengthen my own voice.
Q: How has your current college experience gone, and what has been the best part?
A: My college experience has been challenging, and there were many times when I doubted my abilities as a student. Over time, I realized that I did not have to be the smartest person in the room—I just had to be the most determined and stubborn to give up. Despite the doubt and obstacles I’ve faced, the most rewarding part of my journey has been finding my reassurance in my passion for nursing. I still get nervous before simulation exams, but those are the moments that remind me that I’m working toward the career I dream of.
Q: What advice would you give to a first-year Richmond Promise Scholar who is just heading off to a new college or CTE program?
A: Advice I’d give to someone who will begin this new chapter in their life is to ask questions. Talk to your professors and be open about feeling stuck. I would tell them to not fear making mistakes, but to fear missing out on the opportunity to learn from them. Most importantly, I would remind them that they do belong in higher education. Struggling in classes does not deem you incapable. Consistency, patience, and confidence is what builds success—so be confident in your capabilities and continue pushing.
Q: What are you looking forward to doing after finishing school?
A: After finishing school I am looking forward to getting my license as a Registered Nurse so that I can begin my practice. But I also look forward to beginning my new life. After years of studying and hard work I’m excited to travel, make new memories, and have some fun along the way!
