Meet Our Summer Associates: Carolina Ayala
Carolina Ayala is a rising third-year student at the University of Southern California (USC). She is a graduate of Making Waves Academy, and she joined the Richmond Promise Summer Associate program in the summer of 2026. She has previously served as Richmond Promise’s Communications & Marketing Intern.
Q: First, a few logistics. Please tell us your name, school, year in school, high school and major/intended major.
A: Hello there! I’m Carolina Ayala, a soon-to-be junior at the University of Southern California (USC), where I’m pursuing a B.A. in Dramatic Arts with a minor in the Entertainment industry. I’m also a proud graduate of Making Waves Academy—shoutout to the 21st Wave! My passion for theatre began at the East Bay Center for the Performing Arts, where I discovered that the stage felt like a second home. The program laid the foundation for my artistic journey and inspired me to continue my training through higher education at USC. Since starting college, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to perform at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland with the Los Angeles Theatre Initiative, appear in two student-led theatre productions, and take on lead roles in numerous student short films. I’m excited to continue exploring new opportunities both on stage and on screen.
Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Is there anything in particular that motivates you as you go through college and prepare yourself for a career?
A: My family is my greatest source of motivation as I continue my college journey. Their sacrifices remind me of the privileges I have today, and they inspire me to make the most of them by pursuing my dreams with purpose and determination. Every accomplishment is not only a reflection of my hard work but also a testament to the love, support, and resilience my family has shown me throughout my life.
Q: How has Richmond Promise played a role in your education?
A: Richmond Promise reminds me that I carry my community with me wherever I go. It’s a constant reminder that I’m never alone and that my success is connected to something much bigger than myself. Throughout my college journey, Richmond Promise has been incredibly generous, supportive, and understanding, especially whenever I’ve encountered issues with my scholarship. Their willingness to help and their positive attitude have eased the financial burden of pursuing a college education, allowing me to focus more on my academics instead of the stress that financial uncertainty can bring. I’m deeply grateful for their investment in my future and for believing in students like me every step of the way.
Q: Why did you choose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate and what are you hoping to take from the experience?
A: I chose to be a Richmond Promise Summer Associate because I want to be someone who can guide students with a major transition in their academic journeys. I understand how the entire process can be overwhelming, and if I can help out to the best of my ability, then that brings me peace at the end of my day.
Q: What do you want to contribute to Richmond and/or the world?
A: I hope that one day I can give back to Richmond by using my experience in the performing arts to help elevate the voices of our community. As I pursue a career in entertainment, I aspire not only to fulfill my own dreams but also to represent the Bay Area and the Latino community with pride.
Q: How has your current college experience gone, and what has been the best part?
A: The best part of college so far has been gaining a strong sense of independence. While it can be daunting to navigate everything on your own, there’s something incredibly rewarding about discovering what works best for you. Along the way, you also begin to learn more about who you are. College has given me countless opportunities to reflect on how much I’ve grown. When I compare who I was in high school to who I am now—and especially when I return home—I realize that my identity has evolved. That change isn’t something to fear; it’s something to embrace. I’ve learned that it’s okay to call more than one place home. Home is no longer defined solely by where I was born or raised, but also by the communities and experiences that have shaped the person I’m becoming.
Q: What advice would you give to a first-year Richmond Promise Scholar who is just heading off to a new college or CTE program?
A: The biggest advice I would tell my first year self is to establish meaningful relationships with your professors early on! Not only is going to office hours super helpful with assignments, it’s a great opportunity for your professors to get to know you outside of the classroom. When I first started out in college, I didn’t realize how approachable, supportive, and welcoming professors could be, since I was very intimidated at first. Over time, you recognize that your professors want you to succeed, whether it’s receiving guidance on academic work, getting support on research, or even building connections that can lead to internships. Looking back, I wish I had taken advantage of this sooner.
Q: What are you looking forward to doing after finishing school?
A: After graduation, I’m looking forward to working in Los Angeles, or any other big city that revolves around entertainment, to first land an internship through a film production company. Along the way, I hope to gain talent representation, work my way to obtain SAG-AFTRA status, and eventually live my dream of becoming a full-time working actress.
