Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. Is there anything in particular that motivates you as you go through college and prepare yourself for a career?

A: My biggest motivation is my family. They’ve been an incredible support system throughout my life, and I’m fortunate to have role models like my brother and sister who inspire me and help keep me on the right path. My family has made many sacrifices for me, and I’m determined to honor that by working hard and giving back in any way I can.

Q: When did you first realize that you were college-bound?

A: I realized I was college-bound during last spring semester. My fall semester felt more like an introduction, a way to see how things would go, but in the spring, it hit me that I was making plans for the rest of my life. Managing a full course load and a tight schedule made me see the bigger picture. Since my goal is to work in the banking and financial industry, I know that journey begins by building my skills and knowledge here in college.

Q: How has Richmond Promise played a role in your education?

A: Richmond Promise has played a big role in my education not just through the monthly emails, but also through the consistent check-ins. I feel as if I always have someone looking out for me, even if they don’t know me personally. Those check-ins are cool and feel like a “temperature check” on how I’m doing, which means a lot. Richmond Promise has also lifted a financial burden, giving me more space to focus on my studies. I feel that I can always reach out for help, no matter what I need.

Q: Why did you choose to apply for RP Leads, and what are you hoping to take from the experience?

A: I applied to RP Leads because I’ve always valued building connections within my community, and this program offers a meaningful way to do that. I want to give back and support others in my community. In any career especially the  banking industry connections are essential. I believe RP Leads will not only help me grow my community ties but also strengthen my networking skills, which will benefit me both professionally and personally and play a pivotal role in my life.

Q: What do you want to contribute to Richmond and/or the world?

A: I want to give back to the Richmond community. I attended kindergarten to high school in Richmond and would like to specifically provide resources and guidance within the financial and banking industry, as there are a lot of misconceptions so giving back within that realm is important to me. I want to do my part to make Richmond a better community.

Q: How has your current college experience gone, and what has been the best part?

A: Overall the experience has been good, but a bit of a roller coaster. I feel I’ve learned a lot about myself and what I can do. College has taught me how to manage my time wisely and plan my days ahead. I have work, school, and other things going on, and utilizing organizational skills has been extremely helpful. Overall it has been a challenge, of getting to know myself and seeing what works and does not work for me.

Q: What advice would you give to a first-year Richmond Promise Scholar who is just heading off to a new college or CTE program?

A: Breathe, for sure. You’re on your own path and no path is the correct path. Definitely think about what you’re going to do and if it’s something you want, then you can put everything into it. You’re not the only one in this so if you’re ever struggling you can ask for support. Whatever you do, do it with compassion and with the support of others. Be the most successful that you can be at what you’re doing.

Q: What are you looking forward to doing after finishing school?

A: At the moment I am thinking about going for my masters after my undergrad but also looking forward to seeing where my baby steps have gotten me and seeing where I can improve, whether that is networking and applying for a job within the field of banking. Within the next few years, I see myself working at the bank, which may mean starting as a teller and moving up in positions. I know it is a long road but I know I can accomplish it. I want to be in a position to help members of my community strive. One of my strongest personality traits is empathy and putting myself in others shoes, so I want to also use my experience to help younger generations in my community.
